Gethin Jenkins Joins Toulon

It’s been confirmed, Gethin Jenkins is leaving the Cardiff Blues at the end of the season and joining Toulon.

This news should shock nobody, indeed we’ve been mulling it over on the forum for the last couple of weeks, especially on this thread.

Given that the Cardiff Blues were only prepared to offer the same contract he is on now (and then only after being pushed) no one would be able to blame Gethin for deciding to take the money on offer in France, where he joins up with Gareth Delve in Toulon

.
Not that one can essentially blame the Blues either. Win Welsh squad call ups Gethin is missing every November, February and March. With rest periods and injuries sustained his actually time with them is very limited, which is exactly why they are saying they shouldn’t be paying players when they are with ‘Team Wales’.

But it is part of a worrying trend of our players moving away. He joins the likes of James Hook, Mike Phillips and Lee Byrne in moving to France, and many other big name players are being rumoured to be leaving, with he latest being the rumour that Jon Davies will be joining Northampton Saints.

But back to this move and Gethin seems unhappy with the Blues not given him any real choice in moving on

“I definitely will not be with the Blues next season, and yes, I am going to France,” Jenkins said. “I was offered a deal by the Blues, but that was after talks were put off about an extension on several occasions.

“In the end, they said they couldn’t pay me while I was fulfilling international commitments, and so I felt I had no choice.

“I had to think about my future, just like any player or anyone in any walk of life would do.

Discuss this move, others and the future of our regions on our Welsh Rugby Forum

The WRU is continuing it’s review into the Welsh regions, with many predicting an overhaul (including many on our Welsh Rugby Forum, with some suggesting the Dragons and potentially the Ospreys could be development regions). The regions have been pressing for extra money for each person in the Welsh squads.

Paul Tito Warns Welsh Regions "Heading for a Crash"

This blog has long been in favour of such a move, rewarding the regions actually producing (and losing) International players, allowing them to subsidise the fees and have adequate replacements for when they are on international duty. Now Paul Tito has added his feelings on the matter.

The Cardiff Blues 2nd row feels that without teams getting adequate remuneration for their Welsh stars being absent, the regional game in Wales could be heading for a huge crash.

He bemoans the Welsh players having little time with the region, and how inadequate funding is leading to the few World Class players at the regions being forced to move on, players such as Casey Lualala who will be moving to Ireland next season, taking up a contract with Munster.

“It’s a bit of a mess at the moment, isn’t it? They’re [the regions] having talks with the WRU to pay for the top 22 [Wales players],” Tito said.

“It’s got to happen otherwise the regions are going to crash and burn.”

“They’re paying these boys all year round and we don’t really see them too much,” lock Tito said.

“Something has got to happen otherwise the regions are going to struggle.

“At the moment it’s not working because the regions are crying poor and the Welsh Rugby Union have got a fair bit of dough at the moment.

“It’s just a balancing act and they haven’t got it right at the moment, they need to change it.

“Maybe a little bit like the Irish. I think they contract the top 22 or 25 and they [the Irish Rugby Football Union] pay them.”

“You don’t have too many world-class players in your teams these days and we’ve got about three, and a couple of them are off contract and one’s already gone,” Tito added.

“It’s pretty sad to lose your playmaker in the backline really, because it makes life fairly difficult.”

Cardiff Blues vs Ulster – the Teams

Cardiff Blues welcome back a number of Welsh squad players ahead of the Rabodirect Pro12 clash with Ulster. The most headline grabbing of which is Gavin Henson returning from Welsh training to line up at 12.

The inside center hasn’t made much of a splash since his move to Cardiff, and with not getting a look in for Wales should be eager to lace a timely reminder of what he can do, especially with the Cardiff Blues coach Justin Burnell not mentioning him as a center option for next season.

Cardiff also get Lloyd Williams and Scott Andrews back from the Welsh set up, who will similarly be looking to set down markers with Welsh laces for the England game next week up for grabs.

Even more exciting to Cardiff fans is that it is another game at Cardiff Arms Park, following on from last weeks game there against Connacht. With many fans unhappy at the move to the Cardiff City Stadium, and last weeks game being a sell out, the Blues will likely be enjoying another maximum support, with teh capacity for the game increased to 9,000, up from 8,000 last week.

Justin Burnell picked out Ruan Pienaar as Ulster’s dangerman.

“It is a massive challenge for us but important that we pick up points to get us to the play off stages,” he said.

“I think Ulster’s threat comes from across the board. They have recruited some exceptional South African and New Zealand forwards and have a very good half back pairing.”

“Pienaar is a key man for them and if there was a world ranking I certainly think he would be in the top three whether he was playing 9 or 10.”

“The players and coaches certainly enjoyed being back at the Arms Park last weekend and we are fortunate that we have two great venues to play at. It was a great occasion.

“Certain players hadn’t played there and were proud that they were given the opportunity. I hope we can secure the same result on Friday.”
